Rethinking Europe - The Populist Moment and the Future of Democracy

To mark the kick-off of our lecture series "Rethinking Europe", we are happy to welcome the political theorist Chantal Mouffe for her lecture "The Populist Moment and the Future of Democracy". Mouffe will discuss the crisis of representation in Western liberal democracies and examine the reasons for the growth of populist parties. How can we stop the advance of right wing populism? Is developing a left populism a solution?

At this occasion we are celebrating our new office space in the Marolles area and welcoming Andreas Thomsen as new director of our European liaison office in Brussels. Thomsen will take his position in April 2018 and replace Martin Schirdewan, now MEP for Die Linke at the European Parliament. The evening will start with a panel discussion of Left political representatives to reflect challenges and opportunities for the Left in Europe.
