How can we support those who experience war or other disasters? How can the idea of solidarity be put into practice? How can cross-border initiatives be organised democratically?

These questions illustrate how relevant the experience of International Workers Aid (IWA) still is today – and what there is to learn from this endeavour of transnational commitment in times of crisis.

International Workers Aid was founded during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina and organised more than 30 food convoys to the city of Tuzla in northern Bosnia between 1993 and 1995. When the war ended, IWA stayed on and supported local projects promoting democratic and multi-ethnic groups and ideas for several years.

Bringing together groups and individuals from various European countries, IWA managed to organise solidarity across borders in a collective and democratic manner. In order to reconstruct and analyse the history of this original but little-known initiative, to define the meaning and importance of IWA’s commitment and to contribute to a better understanding of the mobilisations regarding Bosnia and Herzegovina in Europe in the 1990s, historian Nicolas Moll has authored a comprehensive study, in collaboration with the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung Brussels Office.
