United Beyond Gas - voices of resistance from Latin America and Europe
One of the fights against the fossil fuel lock-in and our extractivist economies is the fight against new gas infrastructures. New gas pipelines and import terminals lock us for decades in the use of ever more natural gas (or "fossil gas" as we prefer to say). In Europe, currently 100 new gas infrastructure projects are planned (pipelines and import-terminals), but local groups and NGOs, supported by decision-makers and scientists, have joined forces in a Gas-Network to fight these new infrastructures and their public funding by EU institutions.
These new gas infrastructures endanger the livelihoods, the environment and the health of the people on the ground, not only in Europe, but worldwide. Europe is a big gas consumer and a main driver of the rapid global growth of gas extraction. So new gas infrastructures are not only a climate problem (gas/methane is a potent greenhouse gas), but a social justice problem, a climate justice problem.
We have the pleasure to receive the spokesperson of the Mexican organisation Consejo Regional de Pueblos Originarios en Defensa del Territorio de Puebla e Hidalgo. 40 indigenous communities have united to resist the Tuxpan-Tula pipeline in the Mexican states Puebla and Hidalgo, in order to protect their land and water. Connected to a new LNG-terminal it will import fracked gas from the US to Central Mexico. It is part of those pipelines that are planned since the privatization of the Mexican energy sector to connect the US gas grid with the Mexican and the Central American grid.
The activist from Mexico is keen on sharing experiences and connecting with others, will meet local groups, decision-makers and journalists in Europe and we are planning meetings for her with the UN rapporteurs for Human Rights and Indigenous rights.
The Speakers-and-Training-Tour aims at popularizing iconic struggles on natural gas in North and South and to connect and strengthen local groups in Europe and beyond. It provides room to learn from each other and to find out how mutual support can be improved.
