Urban Movement!

The Brussels office of the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung cordially invites activists and people from all over Europe to the Conference “Urban Movements! Connecting Resistance and Alternatives” taking place from 18th to 20th of October in Brussels. We seek to connect different actors from many European cities who work on alternatives of transport systems in urban areas or who are actively resisting the systematic dominance of cars in European cities. Together, we want to develop progressive ideas on how to change our urban transport systems from below and how to successfully act against fossil fuel based individual traffic. The conference aims to emphasize ideas of a just and ecological transition and to develop strategies for grassroots activists working towards alternative mobility. By organizing the conference, the RLS also intends to build a European network on progressive actors in order to exchange, to learn and to strengthen each other.

What is to be expected? Program Outline

We want to meet during the weekend from Friday afternoon until Sunday after lunch. The conference shall give space for exchange, presentations, discussions, strategy, planning, skill sharing and networking. However, every participant should play an active role in the conference. That is why we will ask you to contribute in some way to the conference so that we can design the conference as a team according to our needs, questions, capabilities and our knowledge.
For all invited participants, the RLS will provide accommodation and catering as well as take care of the travel costs.

Are you working on transport alternatives to cars? Call for Participation

We are looking for inspiring people and groups who work on questions of traffic, transport and mobility in their cities. It doesn’t matter if you fight for more bike lanes, against parking spaces or highways, for a free or more affordable public transport or for strict speed limits in your community. We welcome different forms of actions: people and groups who work with petitions, who influence political decision-makers, who work in form of education, campaigns, demonstrations, critical masses, actions of civil disobedience, and many more. Every action towards a more sustainable transport system is appreciated! We are inviting different actors in order to discuss a high variety of strategies or tactics that are directed against the dominance of cars in our transport systems.

We would like to ask you to get in touch with us and shortly answer the following questions. This is not meant to be a formal application process. We just want to get to know you and your group and will get back to you as soon as possible:

•    What’s the name of your group?
•    In which city are you active?
•    What’s your main topic and/or campaign?
•    How do you organize yourselves and with whom are you cooperating already?
•    What was your biggest success or your best practice? What would you like to share?
•    What are the biggest challenges in your activism?
•    What would you expect from this conference?
•    How would you like to contribute to the conference’s program?

Deadline is 31 July 2019.
